Why aren’t teachers using reasoning when they show how to solve problems?

Writer's picture: Sunok KimSunok Kim

I looked at the video clips which showed some teachers showed the ways solve math problems. They keep saying basically ‘ you do this, you do this, you do this, …’

They don’t explain why they need that process at the point.

I thought why

In order to solve the problems, teachers should ask ‘and then what, and how?’

To find ‘and then what’, teachers have to show reasoning, and then to show how, teachers have to help students explore. The problem of this process, it will take time for students if they use this process during tests. So in order teachers to help students solve problems quickly, teachers have to teach the best process led to answers. The students have to get answers automatically to meet the limited time. That is the reason teachers focused on the best way to answer rather than the development of thought process of students.
